Abstract

Manipulating in sports competitions is among the existing challenges in international sports law, dealt with by the Council of Europe within the Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions. The possibility of non-EU State Membership is among the features of this treaty. Iran is among those countries that face manipulation in sports competitions. Match fixing and Betting has reflected in Parliament’s article 90's Commission's official report. Therefore, the Iranian sports system could benefit from accepting conventional commitments to eliminate defects. What are the odds of Iran's accession to this treaty considering existing obstacles? This article will answer this question using Descriptive - Analytical method and benefits from upstream documents, ICJ Judgments, and doctrine. Findings clarify that invoking reservations on the extradition of Muslims and issuing a declaration on the betting prohibition in the Iranian legal system will pave the way for accession. The accession will cause public awareness of manipulating sports competitions and codifying a concerning comprehensive code, and improvement of transparency in sports institutions in the Iranian legal system.
