Abstract
Puberty is one of the most complex developments in adolescence. The experience of puberty for girls is associated with the occurrence of menstruation. This article seeks to understand how puberty is experienced by single, employed, and educated girls. The research method is phenomenological. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews. Thirty single, employed, and educated girls aged 25 to 45 living in Semnan and Shahrood cities, who were selected through purposive sampling, were interviewed. Then, in the level 1 coding, we reached 13 categories: "time of puberty experience", "importance of puberty event", "how to deal with puberty symptoms", "customs and customs of facing puberty", "mother's role in facing puberty", "consciously facing puberty", "semiconsciously facing puberty", "unconsciously facing puberty", "perception of women", "approach to one's own gender", "perception of marriage", "desire to marry" and "unwillingness to marry" and in the level 2 coding, we reached 5 main categories: "time of puberty event", "how to deal with puberty", "level of awareness of puberty", "perception of femininity" and approach to marriage. The results of the analysis of the findings show that the experience of puberty and the way of facing it play a role in the perception of femininity and sexual socialization of girls. Mothers are one of the main sources of education for girls during puberty. The experience of puberty and how it is dealt with varies across generations. Differences in the experience of puberty lead to differences in the understanding of femininity. This affects the way unmarried girls deal with marriage.
